Lady of the Flies

Once again our house is being invaded by fruit flies. Last summer it was the same story. I tried the can of Raid made specially for flies and other winged pests, but that didn't seem to help. I've tried the cup of vinegar with a funnel in the top...that worked to get them there, but once I tried to dispose of the liquid, they all just flew away. I thought the point of the funnel was to get them inside the cup. Maybe I'm just an idiot.

Anyway, the only other piece of advice I've received that I haven't tried yet is a bowl of red wine set out on the countertop. Apparently the flies are atracted to the wine because of the sweetness, then when they get in it they get "drunk" and die. Well since I am not a drinking woman, I have never bought a bottle of wine. But I've decided that I will be going to the liquor store on Monday.

Does anyone out there know if this actually works?

The best thing I've used (for houseflies) is a sticky strip (not the ones that hang from the ceiling and twist down) that goes on the windows. It is around 2" by 5" (rough estimate). The window itself attracts the flies and the strip is so sticky, they just stick there. It's pretty gross when you get a lot of flies and it comes time to throw the strip away. But it worked really well. I don't know about fruit flies though. I bet it would work...

We've had problems with these little moths for about a year now. They first came in with a bag of bird seed. On more than one occasion I've gotten up in the morning to find one dead in the little bit of red wine I left in a wine glass by the sink. I had never heard the theorgy that it was supposed to kill them, but it actually does!

Hope you get rid of your fruit flies!
